A great way to look back on life’s most cherished moments is by looking at photos. Photos help keep memories fresh as though they happened just recently. They make for great conversation topics whenever relatives and friends come over your home.
Luckily for you, technological advancements make photos last for a very long time. In particular, photos that are taken using a digicam. But what about those photos taken with a traditional film camera? Sure you need to worry about proper caring for prints and their negatives, to make them both survive longer.
Many people still can’t get over the charm exclusive to film photography. The old feel to it is something that modern digicams can not completely take the limelight from. No matter which you prefer, traditional film or digital, there are ways to make your photos live longer.
Let us start with photos taken with a traditional film camera. All those you wish to showcase are stored in photo frames or albums. But the rest are likely to end up in boxes. When storing photos in boxes, try to insert acid-free lining in between them. Better yet, place each one in polyester cases. Then store these boxes atop shelves, away from heat, light and moisture.
As for the negatives, let them stay in those plastic casings. Such will prevent them from sticking to each other, otherwise rendering them useless for processing. It’s a great idea to scan printed photos, especially when their negatives no longer exist. This way, your digital copies can be easily printed when the need for it arises.
Photographs sure look good presented in a creatively done scrapbook album. Just make sure you store your finished projects in dust-free shelves. Protect them from damaging elements such as light, heat and moisture. It’s best to use a scanned and printed version of the photographs instead for this hobby.
Storage of digital pictures is comparatively easier than their film counterparts. You got a variety of options when it comes to which storage media to use. But it’s recommendable to burn your digital picture files on CD’s and DVD’s. Also, make two copies of each, and store them in quality cases or sleeves.
An SD card or flash drive should only serve as temporary storage. This is because they might get corrupted in time, especially as you add and delete files over and over again. In addition, do transfer digital photos onto newer storage media which will be introduced in the future.
A photo of your daughter’s first stage play or your son’s trip to the Alps wearing a giro ski helmet is priceless. That’s why, whether taken with a film camera or digicam, you must take good care of your photos. If so, they will last for a long time, for your grand kids to enjoy.
