PRINCE2 stands for Projects in Controlled Environments, version 2. It is a method of project management that was created in the late 1980s as a government standard for IT. However, it quickly became widespread both within and outside the IT industry and the second version, was designed as a more general system. Prince2 training courses are now the most popular way to get ready for the accreditation exam, which is the main standard in both the public and private sectors.
Format of PRINCE2 Training

PRINCE2 courses focus on eight main processes, divided into 45 different sub-processes. Every phase has key points and goals to aim for, enabling simple evaluation and efficient resource distribution. The standard framework means that participants are clear about their own roles, and those of others involved.
Unlike some other project management training methods, PRINCE2 courses concentrate on delivering goals rather than on activities and procedures. The methods behind Prince2 are available publically, but is it normal to learn through a recognised course to get the most benefits possible.
Prince2 is a fully scalable process, as sometimes, depending on the size of the projects, certain elements would not be required. Each step contains notes on how much should be applied in different situations. This method is quite flexible and can be tailored to suit a specific project, rather than rigidly being designed to fit all aspects at once.
It has been described as ‘structured common sense’, a method formalising timescales, responsibilities and optimising resources. There are areas that are not particularly well covered including: budgeting, man management and risk assessment. It is therefore better suited as an additional tool for those who already have some project management experience, rather than a tool for beginners.
