Making A Garage Sale As Successful As Can Be

Even though they are not as popular as they once were, garage sales are still widespread and found in every city in America.  Given the small or nonexistent marketing budget, it can be quite difficult to get the word out to people who want to buy.  Luckily there are several easy things that anybody can do to make any garage sale successful.

Figuring out what will be sold is the first thing that must be done.  The advertisement should have a brief list of hot items for sale, which is a fantastic way to spark people’s interest.  Usually goods that people want must be listed and placed front and center, and the rest of the stuff should just be in the yard sale and not focused on.

Some are more effective than others, but there are a few great ways to get people to show up.  Putting self-crafted signs on telephone poles everywhere is a great way to get the word out and get attention.  It is a good idea to check with the police department first because it can be illegal in some areas.  Some areas have laws against hanging signs on poles, so it may be a good idea to avoid that route as much as possible.  It is good to start a week or two ahead of time, especially if planning to post signs in several people’s yards (with permission, of course).  It can be helpful to take an ad out in a newspaper, but that route is generally very expensive and should only be done in special cases.

Some areas have an enormous following for garage sales, and some people are very hardcore about it.  If the sale commences at 8 in the morning, people will often start arriving around 7.  Some people intend to have first grabs at the good stuff, and pricing while keeping that in mind is a very good idea.

Haggling is a crucial skill to have when running a sale, and setting the prices within reach but with the ability to knock money off will help people justify their purchase.  Haggling is an incredibly important skill for the seller to have, since it will dictate how much of the stuff is sold.  It is good to be stiffer with the prices in the beginning and throughout the morning lower them as needed.  Depending on the condition and rarity, if old White Stripes vinyl or Bob Dylan vinyl is priced at ten dollars, then it should initially only go down one dollar or two.  Later on, these can go for significantly less, all based on how bad the person wants to get rid of them.
