The market for games is on the increase, there is certainly no denying this as it is set to take over from the sales of CD and DVD in the very near future. It used to be that music in a video game was mostly just thrown in to make it sound cool and to work hand in hand with the game play but nowadays music in a game is taking as much time to write and records as the games take to be made. Why on earth is this happening?
Would films such as Star Wars, Jaws, Avatar be so great without the music in them, I highly doubt it? Of course Star Wars would certainly still have turned out to be a great film but it really is the soundtrack that makes that story a lot clearer. Game creators are fully aware that a great soundtrack is going to help them out a lot and the soundtrack is being given more time and money.
Think of a game like Halo, the ambient is always there but when you hit a moment of importance the music is unleashed and it really helps to tell the overall story. This is exactly what happens in the film industry.
Another important thing to take into consideration is the amount of artists that want to work with games nowadays, instruments that wouldn’t work in a film work perfectly in a game, take banjos as an example for the much loved Banjo Kazooie franchise.
Albums of the game soundtracks are being released and even better they are being purchased and the soundtracks are made from all kinds of instruments from electro acoustic guitars to the simple electric guitars.
It would certainly seem that the music we hear in video game is becoming more and more important as the years go by.
