Pool chlorine products are not the only way to sanitize a swimming pool.

Ozone
Ozone, a form of oxygen which is active, reacts with contaminants. Like chlorine, ozone gas, when dissolved in water, combines with impurities and oxidizes them. Because it makes them join together, they are easily removed form filters. You can cut chlorine use by 60% to 90%.
Copper and Silver
It is widely known that copper kills algae and silver kills bacteria and viruses. They have long been used for water purification. Copper and Silver are ionized by a very small amount of electricity and react with the contaminants in the water destroying them.
For easier removal from the filter the bacteria and algae adhere together. Regular swimming pool chlorineusage will be greatly reduced but a periodic shock of the pool with chlorine or a non-chlorine oxidizer will be needed.
