Spanish is one of the major world languages. It is not only spoken in Spain, but with the exception of Brazil, right across Central and South America. In the first place you won’t be interested in learning the intricacies of verb forms and tenses. All you want is to be able to express yourself clearly. Vocabulary is therefore very important, as well as basic verb structure.
Attempt to locate an instructor that offers lessons of a highly practical nature. To start off it’s important that you learn how to pronounce the consonants and vowels in Spanish correctly. Once you know this, you will not only be able to read any Spanish word, but also what the correct pronunciation is. Fortunately for beginners, Spanish is not as complicated as English in this regard. The vowels are always pronounced the same way, regardless of how or where they are used.
Your second request should be to be taught phrases which you can use when booking accommodation. Once you know a simple phrase like ‘do you have a single room with a private bathroom?”, you are at least able to make sure you have a roof over your head at night. And learning how to ask whether breakfast is included in the price will often keep your stomach full as well!
The next area in which you should become familiar with general terms is that of booking and buying transport tickets. Without being able to buy a bus or train ticket, you should never venture into a foreign country on your own. And definitely not without knowing how to find out the taxi fare to the city center!
Last, but certainly not least, you have to learn how to say two very important words in Spanish. Two words that were probably among the first ten you learned when your were a baby: ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. You will be quite surprised at the amount of goodwill these two simple words will generate when you are in a foreign country. Local people won’t mind your broken attempts at all – to the contrary they will appreciate you trying to speak their language and treat you with even more hospitality.
